<p>First published in 1967 <i>Social Change and the Schools </i>is an examination of the change which took place in the English school system between 1918 and 1944. Special attention is paid throughout to the social factors operating on and within the schools and there is a close study of the conflicts and debates which the changing social forces brought about.</p><p>Mr Bernbaum considers the effects of industrialization and traces the growth of the educational system in terms of its relationship to the social structure and to the economic system. He examines educational reconstruction and reorganisation in the 1930’s changes in educational practice during this period and finally analyses the situation in 1944.
