<p>Originally published in 1965 the author makes a strong case for the study of international relations arguing that given the rational approach he advocates it is possible to avoid a major war since no government wants one. His theories reach some controversial conclusions. Throughout the book the author illustrates his arguments with examples taken from the last 100 years of European history. Material for more detailed study of these examples is included in the statistics and maps in the appendices.</p>
