First published in 2003. Part of the British Political Tradition collection this is Part one Volume III This account of the emergence of contemporary political institutions in Britain follows volumes dealing with The Rise of Collectivism and The Ideological Heritage both of which appeared in 1983. It shows how in the perspective these other works describe the traditional machinery of government expanded notably and was in many ways completely altered.
